He was the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain and Ireland (1714-27), in addition to being (as Georg Ludwig), elector or ruler of the country of Hanover (now part of Germany). He was an unpopular king, but created a more stable political schema in Britain and helped bring peace to northern Europe. Early life George was born on 28 May 1660 in Osnabrück, then part of the divine Roman Empire. He was the oldest son of Ernest Augustus, Duke of Brunswick-Lüneburg, and his wife, Sophia of the Rhineland Palatinate. Sophia was the granddaughter of King James I of England through her mother, Elizabeth of Bohemia. For the first year of his life, George was the only heir to his novices and three childless uncles German territories.
