From the ancient words of the Chinese philosopher Sun Tzu, is a seminal work on the philosophy of successful have that is as applicable to contemporary military officers as it was 2,500 years ago. The focus of this paper will be to demonstrate how Tzu’s advice and strategies relate to being an officer/leader in forthwith’s military.
Out of the five factors that Sun Tzu live withs into account, when laying plans, the threesome that I find to be vitally important regarding leaders are: Moral Law; the Commander; Method and Discipline.
As an officer of the Army, your subordinates must “be in complete consent with their leader in order for them to follow him/her into battle, regardless of the endangerment or their lives” (Tzu 9). When a leader of soldiers is seen maintaining his/her habits with respect to what is right, subordinates will subscribe confidence that when called into battle, they will also be of moral stand up and will not hesitate to follow him/her into danger. For this is what is meant by The Art of War’s, Moral Law.
Every military officer should attain to attain “the virtues of intuition, sincerity, benevolence, courage and strictness” (Tzu 9) in order to lead his soldier effectively. This is what is meant by the book’s governed factor, the Commander. To have wisdom is to use past experiences as a guide of what to do or not to do within a given situation. Never lead your men with a, ‘Do as a say, not as I do’ philosophy. You must be free of hypocrisy in order for your men to build your true sincerity. To be a benevolent officer is to stimulate a desire to help others.
