Of course, the costuming and acting serve up recreate the turn-of-the-century Irish middle class represented in Joyce's story, complete with a bourgeois couple and alcoholic Irishmen. While producing a Joyce short-story as a musical theatre break up does erode the subtlety of the work, there are times when the songs actually serve to flesh out the characters to a greater level than in the original story.
