In the novel Heart of Darkness, Joseph Conrad tells a story of imperialism in the African Congo through the eye of the main character, Christopher Marlow. Marlow is very introspective and his position as a sailor for a Belgium steamboat company enables him to view imperialism as it in truth is- full of hypocrisy and degradation. Marlow is cynical at times, but cynicism is an earmark way to view the many horrid things that he encounters succession on his journey deeper and deeper into the two true hearts of darkness- African Congo and the concealed heart of man.
